Food for healthy teeth

The sugary drinks and foods we eat turn into acid when they come into contact with the bacteria naturally present in our saliva. It is this acid that breaks down enamel and eventually causes cavities.
Unfortunately, many nutritious drinks and foods contain natural sugar, which is also harmful to teeth. For example, milk, fruit juice and most starchy foods (crackers, teething biscuits, etc.) all break down into sugar. If these foods stay in the mouth long enough, they turn into acid. Of course, you can’t ban these foods from your child’s diet, since they contain vitamins and nutrients essential to healthy development.
In short, to limit the damage sugar does, your role is to keep an eye on what your child eats and drinks and to make sure they brush often enough. Take the time to read the ingredient list of each product before adding it to your grocery cart. Foods containing corn-based sweeteners, corn or maple syrup, honey, molasses, fructose, glucose or dextrose should be eaten in moderation. Since children love snacks, choose water over any other drink. Nuts, cheese or raw vegetables are also excellent snacks, both for oral health and for your child’s overall health. Fruit juice, soft drinks and sweets should be offered only occasionally, followed by a good brushing.
