The truth about fluoride

Fluoride is a mineral made of fluorine combined with another element. It is found in soil, in fresh and salt water, and in the food we eat. Fluoride has several benefits for oral health, including the ability to prevent cavities and even to reverse those that are starting to form.

To prevent cavities on a large scale at minimal cost, the Federal-Provincial-Territorial Committee on Drinking Water ensures that public drinking water contains the right level of fluoride. In short, children who drink water every day and eat a balanced diet get the fluoride they need to fight cavities. If they are lacking, your dentist can advise you on the options available, such as fluoride toothpaste, mouthwash or gel.

However, as the saying goes, everything in moderation! Too much fluoride can cause dental fluorosis in your child. This condition shows up as small whitish spots on the teeth. That is why it is always wise to ask a dental professional before changing anything in your habits.
