Gingivitis vs periodontitis

The two most common gum diseases are gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is a mild inflammation of the gums, usually caused by poor dental hygiene. In most cases it causes no pain, but some signs can point to it, such as bleeding when you brush or floss, or swollen gums. Although it is a minor infection, gingivitis should not be taken lightly, since it often turns into periodontitis if left untreated.
Periodontitis is caused by specific bacteria that grow inside periodontal pockets and gradually destroy the tissues surrounding the tooth. Caught early, periodontitis responds fairly well to treatment, but at a more advanced stage (e.g. deep periodontal pockets, loose teeth), treatment is likely to be more complex. That is why it is essential to keep up with your regular checkups.
