Tooth decay

Definition:
An infection that forms inside the tooth, caused by an imbalance in the bacterial flora of your mouth. This type of infection usually occurs when dental hygiene is inadequate, but other factors can encourage it.
Here are a few:
- Thin, poorly mineralized enamel
- Low saliva flow
- Overlapping teeth
- Eating acidic and/or sugary foods
- Diabetes
- Smoking
The best way to stay clear of tooth decay is still regular brushing and daily flossing. Regular checkups and cleanings with your dental professional will also improve your chances of keeping your mouth healthy.
